A Little Taste of Norwich.......

Some of you may be wondering what Norwich actually looks like. I've posted a number of pictures of London, and of the Norfolk area, but I haven't really given you any pictures of Norwich itself. Well, yesterday a few of the girls and I went into town to scope out our tour destinations (our assignment for this Saturday) and since the weather was actually nice for a change, I decided to take a few pics.

Here's a little map for you. Norwich is located on the East coast.

This is the outdoor market. Its usually pretty crowded, even on a rainy day.

And here we have ye old castle. It was a little disappointing for me actually. I was expecting Cinderella's castle, but this just looks like a big block. Its okay though, any minutes now Ki-ni-gits are going to appear with coconuts.

Pretty arch leading into the Cathedral grounds......

This structure stands in front of the visitors center of the Cathedral. I'm not really sure what its significance is, but it looked pretty cool standing next to such a modern building so I thought I'd include it.

This one is my favorite. This is the Norwich Cathedral, and from this angle it reminds me of the castle in Beauty and the Beast.

Shoilets & Sword Fights

This morning, I attended a talk with several of my classmates, Professors Qualls and Crouch (science dept), and Steve DePaul, Dickinson's Director of Global Education. DePaul is new to Dickinson and has been traveling to a few of our partnership schools asking for feedback from the students. The discussion has made me realize that while I am enjoying my time here immensely, there are definitely a few things I would change. For one, their technology is atrocious. The university email looks like something out of the 90s.

Next, there is the all around efficiency problem. I had a few problems moving to Pennsylvania with its sometimes Southern tendency for slow paced business, however the school administration has always been prompt and my grievances were quickly forgotten. Not so here. I personally have not needed to change classes, but many of my friends have. The experience is best described as a ping pong game played between the Taught Programmes Office (the administrative office for each school which deals with enrollment) and the professors, with the student as the ping pong ball smacked from one side to the other. Apparently, neither the professors nor the administration believe they have the authority to let students into a class. So I have a question - if they don't, who does?

Kitchens:
We don't have an oven.

.........seriously, there is no oven. it's a microwave that they claim turns into a convection oven.

"Shoilet":
The term "shoilet" is used to describe the bathroom in my room. The only thing separating the toilet from the shower is a curtain. The shower is not elevated or in anyway divided from the rest of the room so the entire bathroom floor gets wet when I turn the water on. (Also the sink has two separate faucets one for hot, one for cold. So the water is either scorching or freezing. It's also one of those that you need to press down on and hold which makes it rather tricky. And the pressure is a little funky so the water tends to explode out of the sink and onto me, the floor and the wall)

It should be noted that while I did just go on  mini tirade, I really do like this school. And I find these things more laughable than anything else. And so, to end things on a brighter note.....I have more pictures from Ely and Wicken Fen (stolen of course from my classmates cameras)

That's me and Jamie in a sword fight in Oliver Cromwell's house. Don't let that smile fool you, when the cameras turn off, its a fight to the death!

............And of course, no soldier goes into battle without the proper attire.
I think the raincoat makes me appear rather dashing, don't you? Really completes the ensemble. Anyway, you can't see it because the camera cut it off, but I am actually in "macho-man-sumo-position".

And finally, THE GREAT LEAP!

'til next time........

Ely and Wicken Fen!!!!

Today the Dickinsonians, both of the humanities and sciencey variety went on a trip to the town of Ely. It has a big cathedral as you can see from the picture, one of Oliver Cromwell's houses, and a pretty sweet apple festival.
First, some more pictures of the cathedral.

That last one was taken while drinking some of the most delicious apple cider I have ever tasted. It made me miss your apple pie Mom - I'm sure Shaun is missing it too.

Also at the festival......

ALPACAS!!!!!

.................... (much cooler than a horse)

Cromwell's House:

And now for Wicken Fen. You might be thinking, "yes Sarah, but what the bloody hell is a fen?" (and yes you would be thinking that in a British accent). Well, I now know that the Fens are a marsh/swampy land that were drained a long time ago, but keep flooding so they have to continually keep draining them. If you want a little bit more info on it, you can visit their website at http://www.wicken.org.uk/ or you can look at the little BBC page http://www.bbc.co.uk/handsonnature/wetlands/wicken_fen.shtml .

This was the first thing we saw on our tour. I named him Ferdinand.

Walk Along the North Norfolk Coast

We walked all the way from Sheringham to Cromer. The walk was split between the coast and some woodsy areas slightly more inland.

We found this before we left Sheringham....

Here's Holly, Kaitlin and me right before we started the hike. Nice hair right? I was going for the wind blown look.

Attractive isn't it? Anyway, here I am frolicking in the North Sea. I didn't actually swim in it because it was cold (although some of my classmates took the polar bear plunge) but I did stick my fingers in.

Until next time.....

It's been a few days....

Sorry I haven't written in a while. It's been a little hectic here in Norwich. But here are some of the pictures I forgot to put up before I left London:

PLATFORM 9 and 3/4!!!!!!
This was, I suppose appropriately, very difficult to find. One would think that Platform 9 3/4 would be between platforms 9 and 10, however it is actually between platforms 8 and 9. Anyway, it was a lot of fun to see and I got my Harry Potter fix for the day.
Chinatown
These next pictures are from Regents Park which was just around the corner from us

All of the roses are from the Queen's rose garden within Regents Park. And Laura, don't the last two look like something straight out of the Swan Princess? It kinda made my day.

Hampstead Heath
And on our last night in London, we went on the London Eye.
